The John P.Cohalan Court Complex, located at 400 Carleton Avenue in Central Islip, houses the Suffolk County District Court, The Suffolk County Family Court, and parts of the Suffolk County Supreme and County Courts.
Construction of the complex was completed in 1992. It was named for John P.Cohalan Jr., former Justice of The New York State Supreme Court and Associate Justice of the Appellate Division. He also served as Islip Town Supervisor and Suffolk County district Attorney.
All Suffolk County misdemeanor cases are litigated in the Suffolk County District Court located at the complex. Arraignments of both felonies and misdemeanors take place here, although post indictment felonies are litigated at the The Arthur M. Cromarty Criminal Courts Building in Riverhead.
The Suffolk County Drug Court is located within the complex. There is also a Traffic Division which handles certain vehicle and traffic law violations, and parking tickets are also returnable here.
The Complex is located at 400 Carleton Ave (County Road 17) just north of the Southern State Parkway, and north of the Alfonse M. D’Amato United States Courthouse. It is just south of Citibank Park and the New York Institute of Technology.
If you have a court appearance, get there early, since long lines are common. No one will be admitted into the complex without passing through a metal detector.
