Nassau County Hires Police Ethics Consultant
The Nassau County Court has jurisdiction over all felony prosecutions brought by the Nassau County District Attorney.
With a few exceptions, all County Court matters are heard in the Nassau County Courthouse, located at 262 Old Country Road, in Mineola.
The Court House, which was built in 1940, also contains offices of the Nassau County Criminal Clerk’s Office, the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, the Nassau County Surrogate’s Court, and a small law library. The District Attorney’s Office convenes Grand Juries at this location.
The large limestone building is sort of drab looking from the outside, but has some interesting architectural features inside. Most impressive is the Great Hall, a skylight enclosed space in the center of the building that contains displays including copies of both the U.S. and New York State Constitutions, a tribute to fallen officers of the September 11 attacks, and a large glass-enclosed map of Long Island and the surrounding area.
Most of the courtrooms are large, with high ceilings and enormous chandeliers.
Plenty of famous trials have been held here over the years, including the Amy Fisher, Joel Rivkin, Robert Golub,and Colin Ferguson prosecutions.
Like most county buildings, the court house is looking pretty run down, with years of deferred maintenance taking its toll. Not every Nassau government building gets the treatment bestowed upon the Old Nassau County Court House, although that restoration was long overdue.
